What is a user persona?
The short answer, the version most teams actually need, and the one that wastes an afternoon.
The definition
A user persona is a written profile of one kind of person who uses a product — what they are trying to get done, what gets in the way, and what they would trade to remove it.
The useful part is not the description. It is the constraint: writing it down forces you to commit to who you are building for and explicitly leave everyone else out.
A persona that names nobody in particular constrains nothing, and will not survive the first disagreement about the roadmap.
User persona vs buyer persona vs ICP
Three terms that get used interchangeably and should not be. Same person, three different jobs.
| Dimension | User persona | Buyer persona | ICP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answers | What is this person trying to get done? | What makes this person sign? | Which accounts are worth pursuing at all? |
| Unit | A person using the product | A person deciding on it | A company, with people inside it |
| Written by | Product and design | Marketing and sales | Founders and sales leadership |
| Used for | Onboarding, flows, feature calls | Messaging, offers, cold email | Territory, list building, qualification |
| Fails when | It never ranks two features | It never changes a sentence | It includes everyone |
Most teams need all three, written at different times. Writing the ICP first is usually fastest, because it is the only one you can check against a list.
One of these changes your week
Both are the same length. Only one of them tells you what to do tomorrow.
Names a trigger
"She looks the week a customer email mentions a competitor feature she missed." That is a date on a calendar. It tells you when to send.
Describes a stranger
"32, enjoys hiking, active on social media, values authenticity." True of a hundred million people and actionable for none of them.
The test is simple: could a colleague read this and disagree with you about what to build or send? If not, nothing was decided.
How to build one this week
Interviewing is the honest way and takes weeks. Generating one from a description takes a minute, and its value is that it gives you a draft specific enough to argue with.
Either way the persona is a hypothesis until a real person contradicts it. Write down the contradiction when it comes.
