Interview guide

How to interview your ICP — and rehearse it with a Persona first

Most interview guides stop at the real buyer. This one starts one step earlier: build a Persona from your product description, run your questions past it, then take the script to the calls that matter.

The list gives you who. The calls give you why.

You already pay for name lists. They hand you a title, a company size, a country. They cannot tell you what broke the buyer's week, what they use today, or who else signs off. Deals stall in that gap.

An ICP profile built from one line of product description is a hypothesis. Interviews are the cheapest way to find out which parts of it are true — before you write five hundred emails around a pain nobody has.

Three things a list cannot answer

  • Trigger What changed for them in the last month.
  • Alternative What they use instead of you right now.
  • Blocker Who else has to agree before money moves.

How to interview the real buyers

Six calls beat thirty. Here is the shape.

Ask
  • Five to eight buyers, not one. Cover the two or three roles in the buying committee, not just your champion.
  • About the last time it happened. “Walk me through the last time this came up.” Past behavior is data; future intentions are not.
  • What they did before you existed. The workaround they describe is the baseline you actually compete with.
  • Who else was in the room when they signed. That names the approver your list keeps missing.
  • For the last email thread where the problem showed up. Real artifacts beat recollections.
Do not ask
  • “Would you buy this?” People are polite, and polite is wrong.
  • Do not pitch for the first twenty minutes. An interview is not a demo.
  • Hypotheticals. “If we built X” gets you an answer about a product that does not exist.
How many is enough

Until the same three pain points repeat. Usually six to ten calls across two or three roles. If every call sounds different, the profile is too broad — not the sample too small.

Rehearse the script on an AI Persona first

The real calls above are still the ground truth. But you can walk in prepared instead of improvising.

Describe your product in one line. askuser.ai builds an ICP profile with 18 sections — 13 profile breakdowns and 5 go-to-market materials. It also builds a Persona you can talk to, so you can put your question list through a buyer before you spend a real buyer's hour.

Run every question past the Persona. Vague questions get vague answers; leading questions get the answer you wanted. You will rewrite the script in ten minutes instead of learning it on a call someone else paid for with their time.
